Hi--I'm 53 years old and still miss my Icelandic pony from my Maryland childhood. He was a gelding, and came from Anne Rickert's herd back in 1964 or 65. He was almost white in the summer, but his coat got more speckled with gray and even some tan in the winter. He had a beautiful gray mane and tail. He was the sweetest, most gentle friend you could ever hope for. His favorite trick on me was to lie down and roll in the water whenever we were crossing a river or stream. I rode him mostly bareback, sometimes for hours a day. I loved him very much.

Hi- I am 50 years old and owned my amazing 5 gaited icelandic gelding "Glumur" on his birth certificate, born 1960, and renamed "Gamlen" which is norwegian for "Old Friend". I owned him for 26 years! He was sold by my Dad, Peter Strong in 1969 to the Rockefeller family.A few years later they decided he was too frisky (they had himn in a stall, too much grain)so they gave him back to my dad. At that time (1974?) I was old enough to care for a horse.
Gamlen came with me to boarding school, and college, and helped me through rough times. He went totally blind in 1979, and I helped him adapt to his new condition. He was brave, trustworthy and calm. One trainer who took care of him said "I can't believe him, I have never met a horse with no vices!"
my children were able to ride him, as well as Make A Wish Foundation children and a blind teenager. He passed away on a breezy August 9th, 2000.
I have never left a blog before. Of course Gamlen is my inspiration! Berit
